In June of 1972, sixty men answered the call to join a new and untested division of the Detroit Fire Department and over fifty years later, their legacy lives on in every man and woman who donned the uniform whether it be the tan and greens or fire department blue.

This page was created to help the past generation reminisce while bringing a piece of the past to the new generation. In the coming months, this will hold a archive and repository of articles and photos relating to the early years of the Detroit EMS (DEMS) up to the present DFDEMS.

Medic 5 at Southfield and Joy

From this, you will learn about the history of DEMS, read stories from former medics,  and celebrate the history of the men and women who risk their lives to save others. In addition, you’ll be able to purchase things to show your love for one of the hardest working positions in the motor city.

The EMS Prayer:

As I perform my duty, Lord, whatever be the call,
Help to guide and keep me safe from dangers big and small.
I want to serve and do my best, no matter what the scene.
I pledge to keep my skills refined, my judgement quick and keen.
This calling to give of myself, most don’t understand,
But I stand ready all the time to help my fellow man.
To have the chance to help a child restore his laugh with glee,
A word of thanks I might not hear, but knowing is enough for me.
The praise of men is fine for some, but I feel truly blessed.
Thank you, Oh Lord, for have chosen me to serve in EMS.
